Hi! I’m Missy, and I’m the Honeybee Mama. My name is Greek for honeybee and I’ve always been a busy one. An optimist and a dreamer, I am determined to squeeze every last drip drop out of life. Life is hard, and never slows down, but it’s our perspectives that make our lives worth living or worth giving up on. I say life is what you make of it, so make honey!

First and foremost, I’m a wife and a mommy. I’m married to the man of my dreams, and together we have four children, ages seven to thirteen. My own journey into motherhood inspired my love for serving women as a doula and childbirth educator.

As a Certified Birth Doula, I want to show mothers they don’t have to be afraid of childbirth by combating myths with facts, using simple, effective training techniques. I talk about empowering mothers every chance I get because I love it! With a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, I am a teacher at heart, and have developed my own childbirth training curriculum, which I use to equip my own clients as well as fellow doulas and childbirth educators.

I have been featured on FOX 23′s Tulsa Live, NPR, published in TulsaKids Magazine’s Baby Guide, and am an award winning blogger. I’m also an active member of DONA International, DONEOK, BirthNetwork National, a Chapter Co-leader of Tulsa CountyBirth Network, and co-founder of The Doula Collective of Tulsa.

FAQ

Doula is an ancient Greek word meaning “woman’s servant,” which has evolved as a modern term for a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. A doula also helps the mother establish breastfeeding, and if she is certified as a postpartum doula, she will offer additional support in the weeks following birth for the mother, baby and family.

Women who have a doula present at their birth are:

  • 28% less likely to require a cesarean delivery
  • 31% less likely to require oxytocin to progress labor
  • 9% less likely to use any pain medication during labor
  • 34% less likely to view their childbirth experience negatively
  • less likely to require instrumental delivery with vacuum extractor or forceps
  • more likely to experience a shorter labor
  • more likely to experience a spontaneous birth
  • less likely to have a baby with a low APGAR score five minutes after birth

Tips for Taking Your Kids Anywhere

I learned a long time ago that if I wanted to continue to live my life of adventure the way I did before motherhood, that I was going to have to figure out a way to incorporate my kids into the things I love. To quote a post from 2011, “Swim Lessons: Adventures in Art…

What to do when it’s just. too. hot.

It’s that time again. What time? Summer in Oklahoma time. Now, don’t get me wrong, we’ve actually been incredibly fortunate to have an inordinately LOW number of days in the triple digits, but it’s officially August and we know our luck is waning.  I’ve spent a good portion of the Summer with a broken car…
